A telecommunications engineer whose MS and PhD from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology followed undergraduate training at the Barcelona
Polytechnic University, Marcel Coderch combines a
powerful academic foundation with unique experience working at the
point of convergence of the information, media and telecommunications
industries.
Most recently, he has been the director of the Internet Business Unit
at Retevision and, simultaneously, director of network, systems, and
R&D at the portal www.eresmas.com of Grupo Auna. In this position,
he participated directly in the launch of Retenet, one of the best
IP networks in Spain; in the merger of Servicom, Redes TB and Iddeo
that created the professional ISP at Retevision; in the launch of
Alehop, the first free ISP in Spain, which, oriented toward the domestic
market, grew to 500,000 users in a record time; and finally in the
development of the Eresmas portal.
Prior to these Internet projects, Mr. Coderch held
a number of positions at Grupo Anaya related to the application of
new information technology in the editorial process, in its print
divisions as well as in its Internet and multimedia initiatives. Successively,
he was director of the Anaya R&D Center, director for new technology
and director for systems and information technology development. In
the early ‘90ies, he participated in the launch of Gestevision/Tele
5 and was responsible for the technical infrastructure for El Sol,
where the technology of DTP was first extended comprehensively to
the professional newspaper context, demonstrating for the first time
that a colour newspaper could be produced with a 100% digital production
system.
In another innovative step, in 1994 he contracted one of the first
Internet Frame Relay lines to provide e-mail and Web navigation
services to the Grupo Anaya employees, and used the facility to
build a corporate Website that included the first online bookstore
in Spain. In 1997-98 he served as Anaya’s representative on
the Board of IP Mulitmedia.
